Egg Freezing as a Method for Fertility Preservation

Fertility in women is a process that diminishes with age and can be rapidly affected by certain medical conditions. Today, we have powerful methods at our disposal to manage this process and preserve future chances of conception. Chief among these is egg freezing.

In my clinical practice, preserving fertility is of paramount importance — particularly in patients with diminished ovarian reserve, prior to cancer treatment, or in disease states that may adversely affect ovarian function. In this context, egg freezing is an approach that buys time for the patient and provides a serious safeguard for the future.

The process begins with controlled ovarian stimulation through hormonal therapy. Once the eggs reach adequate maturity, they are retrieved using appropriate techniques. In certain special cases, this procedure may be performed transabdominally.

The retrieved eggs are then cryopreserved using advanced technology and can be stored for extended periods.

The most critical point to emphasize here is this: fertility capacity is not fixed — it declines over time. For this reason, egg freezing should be viewed not as "an option to consider down the road," but rather, in many cases, as a strategic medical decision that must be made in a timely manner.

Every patient's situation is unique. Therefore, the evaluation process must always be individualized, with the optimal plan developed by taking into account the patient's age, ovarian reserve, and overall health status.

Our goal is to protect not only the present, but also the future life plans of our patients. In this sense, egg freezing is one of the most valuable preventive approaches that modern medicine has to offer.
